Instructor

Dr. Hubert Toney, Jr., Ph.D.

I am Dr. Hubert Toney, Jr., Ph.D., and I live in New Tampa. I am a K-12, and higher education music educator, instrumental conductor, professional trumpet player, and currently teaching at Cambridge Christian School in Tampa where I am the Director of Bands and Varsity Tennis Coach. I played tennis for Cypress Lake High School in Fort Myers, Florida in the mid 1970s and have continued to play tennis throughout my adult life. I play competitively on the league, Tennis Tampa Bay that includes players who have a NTRP rating of 3.75 - 4.25. The NTRP ratings range from 1.0, a beginner, to 7.0, a world class player. Players who are a 6.0 are nationally ranked in the USTA or Division I college players.

I received my Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) Level 1 Instructor Certification in March 0f 2024. I also received the Level 1 Tennis Coaching Certification from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) in June 2022 and Level 2 Tennis Coaching Certification March 2024. The Coaching Certification required me to complete SafeSport Training, Safe Play Policy Training, and an FBI background check by the National Center for Safety Initiative Background Screening, which I passed.  I have also passed the written tests for a USTA Line Umpire, Roving Umpire, and Chair Umpire and will continue umpire training for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA and the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

In 2020, when asked to coach tennis at Cambridge Christian School, I delved into the teaching side of the game and have come to enjoy tennis even more. My recent tennis teaching education has included USTA coaching training, books, videos, and online tennis instruction classes and webinars. They have included:
